TV reception conditions in Wantage

Wantage town centre lies in a dip and reception here is not as good as on the outskirts of the town. Having said that, the town is reasonably near to the Oxford transmitter, the land over towards Oxford is flat so digital reception works in virtually the whole town. The worst part of the town for reception is the Charlton Heights area. In this part of Wantage a digital aerial installation will sometimes need a tall mast and a higher gain aerial. In the rest of the town, a standard aerial will deliver good digital signals.

In some towns there is a choice of TV transmitters, so that an alternative is available if a tree or tall building blocks signals from the main transmitter. However, this is not the case for Wantage as the next nearest transmitter is to the south near Newbury and signals are blocked from this transmitter by the Downs. In one or two spots where signals are just too tricky to receive good signal, we recommend a Freesat installation. This offers the same free channels as Freeview but received from a satellite dish. TV reception conditions in the villages around Wantage

Outside of Wantage in all directions, TV reception is quite good with just one or two exceptions. To the north of the town in Grove and the Hendreds the land is flat and the Oxford transmitter is virtually visible in the distance so signals are good – a small TV aerial rig is all that is needed. To the south of the town, although the ground is hilly going up into the downs, generally the hills are north facing so again the Oxford transmitter is usually visible and because the land is so high reception is often really very strong.
