TV Reception Conditions in Oxford
Oxford has its own TV transmitter just outside the city in the village of Beckley. This transmitter serves the whole county and beyond, so within Oxford itself signals are very strong. Because of this, in Oxford a new digital aerial installation will deliver enough TV signal to feed several TV points without the need for an amplifier. There is usually no need for high gain TV aerials and because of this aerial repairs and installations in Oxford can be cheaper than in other areas. There are some exceptions to the rule and some areas have reception problems where hills block transmissions. The Divinity Road and Morrell Avenue area has problems caused by Headington Hill. Jack Straw’s Lane and Harburton Mead suffers the same problem. Parts of Jericho are lower than the rest of North Oxford and have signals blocked by buildings particularly the Oxford University Press building.
In these trouble areas, our digital aerial installers often direct an aerial to the south to the Hannington (Newbury) transmitter. Although this transmitter is out of range, if there is an open outlook in this direction then the signals can be received with the aid of an amplifier. We are also satellite TV installers, since the launch of the Freesat service, it is often more economical to do a satellite installation and receive this service instead. This also has the advantage that a dish installation can look a little neater than a large aerial rig.
OXFORD AERIALS also provide a Sky dish installation service and satellite dish repair service.
We provide domestic and commercial tv aerial installation services. No job too big or small. Call 01865 400141 for a free quotation.
Local Television Reception Conditions
Outside of Oxford the situation is much the same – most of the area has good strong television signals but there are one or two exceptions where hills and trees block signals. These areas are typically the lowest parts of Wheatley, the bottom of the hill in Horspath, the far side of Boars Hill and Wootton, and much of Farmoor. In Wheatley, the Crystal Palace transmitter can be used as an alternative and in the other areas the Hannington transmitter (Newbury) can be used. There is also the option of Freesat.
